מדובר בסרט הקולנוע הראשון של פינצ'ר מאז "נעלמת" ב-2014, והמצייצים הראשונים בהחלט משבחים.
יש האומרים, שמדובר ביצירה "דחוסה, מרתקת ובהחלט מענגת עבור מי שמחבבים את ההיסטוריה של הוליווד".
יש המרחיקים עוד ומכריזים , ש"מאנק יהיה מתחרה רציני בטקס האוסקר הקרוב, בוודאי בכל הנוגע לקטגוריית הבמאי".
